How many times have you repeated a workshop or a class, I mean the same exact class? Typically, we attend a workshop, learn something and we move on. We either want to experience the same teaching with a different teacher or learn a new technique or modality. For me, it’s only with Fran’s Shinpiden class that I can’t get enough of it. I know that’s how most people feel, because everyone; yes “everyone” from Cincinnati from last year’s class came back for either Shinpiden or Intensive this year. There were 18 re-sitters in a class of 25 people. This is not unusual for Frans’ classes. In most classes, there are people who took the class 10 times or more and yet they come back. WHY?
So, here is why:
- Frans teaches Reiki from a spiritual stand point, as it was meant to be, as a Way to realize the essence of our true nature, the Great Bright Light.
- He teaches it as a system that’s full and complete. When I first took the class 4 years ago, I felt like finally all pieces of the puzzle came together. All pieces of the system of Reiki, the 5 pillars: the precepts, the hands-on healing, the symbols and the mantras, the attunements and the meditations were all complementing each other as the pieces of the system of Reiki.
- I realized that these pillars, once seemed separate are, leading the practitioner to the same destination; same purpose: leading practitioner to be the “Great Bright Light”, “Oneness” or “Self-realization”.
- There are many ways to realize one’s true nature. Few paths provide clear direction to the practitioner with supporting practices. I’m privileged to practice Yoga, which is one of these paths with clear directions. Only with Fran’s teaching, the path of Reiki finally become clear, leading the student step by step to “self realization”.
- The reason why most people come back is because the class is experiential and dynamic. Frans deepens his own practice every time and student can get what he/she needs at that point in time, (given the student has been practicing too).
- Frans once said, “If you’re teaching the same thing you were teaching in your Reiki classes 5 years ago, then you’ve not made any progress” I seriously consider this every time I teach a class. He is a good role model, where he deepens his practice every time. Class is never the same.
- The class in intense, during the 3-day class (9 am till 5 pm), Frans leads students step by step, in a very nicely structured manner to be in the “non-duality” space.
One person has asked a question to Frans during the public talk. She said “ but how do you lead the students to experience this in a 3 day class”. A fellow Shinpidener describes this as Frans holding your hand, as you learn to swim and all of a sudden you realize you’re swimming by yourself and by the way you’re in the ocean (and eventually you realize you’re the ocean itself ).
His guidance as a teacher is not limited to the class. Given the student is willing to practice, he supports the students off-the-class at precisely what they need at their spiritual development, leading them in various meditations or practices. He makes himself available, for as long as the student is willing to practice. He keeps the bar very high, for those of us Reiki teachers on how to be a good teacher.
“Practice” is the guiding word for me in Shinpiden class. Frans repeats the need to practice many times during the class. You may come to the class, enjoy it very much but if you’re not practicing, you can’t make way at all. It’s a two way deal. The teacher is always there to support you. It’s a matter if you’re willing to practice. This is one of the few times he gets really serious during the class! Besides the class is fun and active and never a dull moment.
You don’t want it to end but as everything else it comes to an end. Students left with one thing, a clear path on how to practice the path of Reiki to “be” the Reiki, the Great Bright Light.
Here are few hints on how you can start your own practice:
1) Filter everything from precepts, all day, every day. Observe your feelings, emotions, thoughts and actions, Are you acting in accordance with Reiki precepts? Always tune yourself with Precepts.
2) Practice Joshin Kokyu-ho meditation * (see below excerpt)
3) If you know the symbols, practice CKR, chant the name or meditate on the form every day for 6 months. Act from DKM space: No judgment, no attachment. Pure openness.
4) Keep connected to Reiki energy: do your self-treatments!
5) Get attunements if you can (if you want to repeat attunements, let me know). We pass Reiju in every Cincinnati Reiki gathering and Reiki chanting night.
Wait a second… aren’t these points the 5 pillars of the system of Reiki anyway?
You got it!
Love & Light,
Zeynep Premdasi Yilmaz
Joshin Kokyu Ho Meditation*
Joshin-focusing the mind
Kokyu- breath, respiration
Ho – method
Joshin Kokyu Ho is single pointed meditation focusing on using Ki driven by breath, to develop the Hara.
It should be practiced 6 months to 1 year before moving to other meditations.
Always start with Kenyoku Ho and prepare yourself with 6 steps:
1) know your technique
2) sit in seiza with your eyes gazing at the floor
3) release all tension from the body
4) bring mental focus to hara
5) allow the hands rise to gassho
Place your hands on your knees, palms facing upwards.
Begin breathing in through the nose.
Bring the breath down through the body to hara and fill it with energy
On the out breath, expand the energy out through the body, via skin, out into your surroundings
Note: The Joshin Kokyu-Ho excerpt is taken from the book “Japanese Art of Reiki” by Frans & Bronwen Stiene.

Perfect way to reconnect with Reiki! You might have taken a class few years ago; you might not have been practicing Reiki as much or even forgot what it was. It’s OK ! You can come back for a refresher class and refresh your knowledge. This class is free. Did you know that Mikao Usui integrated symbols much later into the Reiki system to help those students who are not as energy sensitive? This is a free continuous education class for my students. $30 for all others. Reiki 2 and above practitioners only. Please RSVP, space is limited.
Reiki Chanting on Tuesday May 15th at 7:30 pm in Cincinnati Yoga School
Thanks to Jeff; we are going to have another Reiki chanting session the third Tuesday of May at the Cincinnati Yoga School. Chanting the jumon helps us connect with the symbols at a deeper level. Dear All,
Happy New Year all over again! This time Happy Dragon Year! Don’t you love it when it’s New Year every month? :-)
As you may know, this year is the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese calendar, which is the only mythical animal in the Chinese zodiac. I knew that the Dragon holds a special place in all the zodiac signs but when I read an article by Roger James Hamilton on Facebook (you can find it on my profile), I got a new understanding of what Dragon holds and what energies it represents. Here they are and my New Year wishes for you in the Year of Dragon:
- Dragon as a mythical animal represents the “Dream” and is a bridge between our reality and our dreams. May we all cross over that bridge and attain our Dreams this year.
- Dragon also is the “Protector of flow”. In order to flow with the Universe, we need to bring in the new, preserve our core and let go of what we don’t need any more. May we all have the wisdom to know what to bring in, what to keep and what to let go and remain in flow this year.
- Dragon is also associated with the number 9, which is the symbol of celestial power and represents “forever”. It represents that core quality within each one of us, our fingerprint in this life. May we all bring out our highest quality out this year and keep it with us “forever”.
- The word Dragon is also associated with “clarity” or “seeing clearly”. May we all see the “truth” at its pure clarity this year.
- The Dragon cycle we’ve just entered, the Water Dragon, comes in every 60 years and represents “inventions”. May we all invent our true selves this year.
What’s this all have to do with Reiki? Reiki for me is about being “Reiki” itself, being the “Great Bright Light”, bringing out “the Divine within”. Knowing that the Dragon Year has energetic qualities to empower us “to bring our Divine self out”, just gives me chills. Let’s take the Dragon energies to empower us a little closer to our true selves. Let’s ground ourselves, balance ourselves, expand our hearts with Reiki to be who we are meant to be.
I’ll end with a waka I’m inspired to write about the Dragon Year:
The clouds separating
The sun and the moon witnessing
The Earth is speculating
The Dragon is coming
Also, I can’t thank enough a Dragon named “Frans” for being the Dragon he is and constantly supporting his students and raising the bar for us Reiki teachers :-)

Reiki Newsletter-January 2012
Dear All,
Our dear friend Tony organizes a “Distant Reiki Experiment” every year for 10 years (yes, this is quite a Cincinnati Reiki Holiday tradition now!). The purpose is to help Reiki practitioners charge their goals with Reiki for the New Year. It’s that time again. You are all invited to participate in this experiment. This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday January 1st at 3pm EST. To sign up and get the instructions click: http://www.distantreikiexperiment.org/
You can still participate if you don’t sign up. At 3 pm on Sunday, please use the following statement of intent during whatever process you choose to send Reiki so we can all focus the energy in the same direction: “I would like to send pure Reiki Energy to fully and completely empower and manifest each goal posted to the Distant Reiki Experiment's website; and to heal and empower every practitioner participating in this event as well as the Earth.”
May all your wishes come true...!
As my tradition in every January Newsletter, I’d like to share some tips on how you can create your resolutions and use Reiki for their materialization.
Ø Manifesting a reality starts with clear intentions (remember Secret: The Law of Attraction). What you focus on, you attract to your life.
Ø Express your New Year resolution with clarity. Instead of saying “I want to be happy”, define happiness. Say “I want a new job that will bring my highest potential” or “I want to be in a relationship where we can share and grow together”. In stead of “I want a new car” say the model and the color and add any other details as possible. This shows how clear you are with your goal.
Ø Always use positive statements in current tense. Instead of saying “I don’t want to be sick”, say “I am completely healthy”.
Ø Visualize yourself as already accomplished your wish or resolution, i.e. you can visualize yourself at the front yard of your dream home, at the office, or in a loving relationship. Visualize as many details as you can.
Ø Think about what emotions you’d have when you accomplish your goal. Add that emotion to your vision. Feel the breeze of the ocean or sand in the beach, warmness of the sun in your face when you’re in your dream vacation. Feel the joy, the happiness, the contentment of accomplishing your goal.
Ø To empower your goals with Reiki; you can simply write down your resolutions on a piece of paper or visualize it.
Ø Activate Reiki by saying an intention or affirmation like “I’m opening myself to Reiki”. Feel the gentle current of Reiki.
Ø If you know Reiki symbols use them at this time. If you are using visualization, beam Reiki to the image as if it’s in a screen in front of you. If you prefer to write it down, take the piece of paper into your palms and provide Reiki.
Ø Send Reiki to the image or to the paper for 5-10 minutes, or as long as you feel necessary. .
Ø Well, the work starts after you send Reiki. Make an action plan and work towards your goal. I’ve just updated my personal OGSM (Objectives, Goals, Strategies and Measures) and I’d be glad to work with you individually if you’d like to create yours. This is a tool I’ve adapted from corporate world. It starts with having a vision, mission, achievable goals, and measurable targets for your goals. It works amazingly!
Ø It’s also very important to prepare yourself for your goal and bring your surrounding conditions ready for the materialization of your wish, i.e. check internet resources for healthy diets, how to learn a new skill, etc. One thing I often do is to talk about my goals to my family and friends. The more you talk about your goals, the more you’re inspired and get closer to them. It’s also important to surround yourself with people who’ll support you and your goals.
Ø Always remember you are worth it and you deserve it!
Ø Probably the most important aspect is not to cling to the outcome. Remember it’ll be materialized only if your goal is aligned with your life plan and if it’s for your utmost good. Trust the Divine order for that.

When I found about the letters exchanged between Saicho and Kukai, I was just blown away. Imagine two young monks, carefully chosen, to travel to China to study Buddhist teachings and to bring back the select texts to Japan. The year was 804! This is the beginning of a journey of friendship, hope, anticipation, collaboration and rivalry. One of the monks was Saicho, later to be the founder of Tendai School of Buddhism, the other was Kukai, the founder of Shingon school of Buddhism. Even though the storm separated their ships and they each went their own separate ways in China, the passion and dedication of these two men, unknowingly, impacted the history of religion in Japan and in some subtle ways our practice as Reiki practitioners.
To tell you little more about Saicho, the founder of Tendai Buddhism, just imagine him as a 19 year old monk who has retreated to Mount Hiei for 12 years! Prior to his trip to China and his uncovering of T’ien-t’ai teachings, Saicho made the following promises as written in one of his earlier works; “Ganmon” (vows) .
*1) So long as I have not attained the stage where my six faculties (five sense and the mind) are pure, I will not venture into the world.
2) So long as I have not realized the absolute, I’ll not acquire any special skills or arts (such as medicine, divination, and calligraphy).
3) So long as I have not kept all of the precepts purely, I’ll not participate in any lay donor’s Buddhist meetings.
4) So long as I have not attained wisdom, I will not participate in worldly affairs unless it to be benefit to others.
5) May any merit from my practice in the past, present, and future be given not to me, but all sentient beings so that they may attain supreme enlightenment
This deep dedication to practice continued throughout his entire life, as he founded an education system for monks, and established retreat centers in mountains for Tendai monks to meditate uninterrupted from distractions of daily life. Saicho’s administrative reforms paved way to a more autonomous order of monks that eventually opened new interpretations of Buddhist practices and flourishing of Tendai Buddhism in Japan.
So, what does this all have to do with Reiki?
Mikao Usui was a Tendai Buddhist. One common thing, I found, between Saicho and Mikao Usui, is the importance they gave to practice of precepts. Even though the precepts we are talking about here are different (Mahayana precepts vs. Reiki precepts), both men, Saicho and Mikao Usui, in principle thought that precepts were the foundation of spiritual practice. Saicho, for almost all of his life time, fought for substitution of existing Hinayana precepts with Mahayana precepts and gave the practice of precepts utmost importance. For Saicho the perfect practice was: practicing the precepts, practicing the meditations, and studying the teachings such as Lotus Sutra.
Although Saicho retreated in Mount Hiei for 12 years, and later established a retreat center in Mount Hiei , he also gave utmost importance to practice of precepts for the lay people. Amongst the pillars of practice, Saicho thought the practice of precepts could be practiced by anyone at any time. He thought that even if one doesn’t have time for meditation or mental ability to practice sutras, everyone could practice precepts.
For Mikao Usui, the Reiki precepts were the foundation of Reiki practice. We later learned that Mikao Usui started his spiritual teachings by teaching the Reiki precepts.
These two men who lived 1100 years apart influenced our lives as Reiki practitioners. Saicho giving utmost importance to the practice of precepts as the foundation of spiritual practice of Tendai Buddhism and Mikao Usui by making the Reiki precepts the foundation of the Reiki practice. So, what we need to do is simply: PRACTICE :-)
Just for Today, Do not Anger
Just for Today, Do not Worry,
Be Grateful,
Work Hard
Be kind to all living beings.
